ArtWork Statement
Inspired by the concentric structure of the vinyl record, this piece transforms the spatial diffusion of sound into a visualized current of flow. The vinyl record itself stands as one of humanity’s earliest and most pivotal mediums for the tangible concretization and preservation of sound. Since its inception in the late 19th century with Edison’s phonograph technology, the vinyl has carried the imprint of time and the memory of sound, serving not merely as a playback device but as a potent cultural signifier.
In this work, the vinyl’s concentric circles are re-interpreted beyond mere grooves; they become the iconography of the sound wave. The arcs, diffusing in layers, mirror the kinetic rhythm of the stylus traversing the disk; while the random dispersal and congregation of particle fields visualize the acoustic state of sound scattering, reflecting, and resonating in the air. This intuitively evokes the palpable texture of music playback — a quality that is simultaneously stable and permeated by subtle noise and contingency.
The history of the vinyl record is itself a narrative arc, transitioning from “mechanical reproduction” to “cultural symbol.” It has borne witness to the genesis of recording technology, the golden age of popular music, the shockwave of the digital tide, and the contemporary vinyl revival. The artwork utilizes this foundation to juxtapose Order and Chaos: the geometric, circular tracks represent the steady current of time, while the noise-driven particles—like the static and breath within a recording—are an ever-present reminder of the essence of sound.
Echoing Tides acts as a poetic reverberation—between the historical texture of the vinyl’s matrix and the real-time genesis of digital noise. The spectator is invited to sense how sound functions both as the etching of time and as a tidal, continuously undulating life force.
